Stary Rynek with the Merchants' Houses in the background and the Ratusz in
the distance. In the foreground and across the main body of the canvas lie
sprawled the disintegrating remains of a recent exhibition of ice sculptures
that had graced the Square before Christmas. On closer inspection one might
observe that the statues were of Polish soldiers in uniform. They now lie
strewn across the Square like corpses, and slowly melt away in the sunshine.


Stary Rynek z domkami budniczymi w tle i majaczącym w oddali Ratuszem. Na pierwszym planie Rynku i płótna topniejące resztki wystawy rzeźb lodowych, które zdobiły Rynek tuż przed w Gwiazdką. Po dokładniejszym przyjrzeniu się, można w rzeźbach rozpoznać polskich żołnierzy w mundurach. Teraz leża porozrzucani po Rynku niczym martwe ciała, topniejąc powoli w promieniach słońca.

Soldiers carved in ice melt away under the invasive caress of the sun and trickle off into the cold earth. Down there wells fill and someone's garden prepares for spring.(Colour on the Merchants' Houses contrasts with grey monochrome and the bone white pile of ice figures that dominate. The faded lines of the Ratusz spire suggest distance and impotence.)

Wyrzeźbieni w lodzie żołnierze rozpuszczają się pod wpływem inwazyjnych pieszczot słońca i wsiąkają kroplami w zimną ziemię. W jej głębi napełniają się studnie, a czyjś ogród szykuje się na powitanie wiosny. (Wielobarwne domki budnicze stanowią ostry kontrast z szarością i bielą stosu lodowych figur, który dominuje w obrazie. Rozmyte linie wieży Ratusza przywodzą na myśl odległość i niemoc.)
